The cycle that was forged on boys by society at a tender age causes men to become bound to their accustomed habits of normalizing war and violence. Mental illnesses such a schizophrenia and destructive social stigmas are one of the causes for gun violence. The notion that mental illnesses are the cause of gun violence largely categorizes a vast number of people as unstable, ruthless characters. The media is one of the culprits, as they frame those with mental illnesses to be belligerent patients. Siegel displays the influence social media has, as news stories describing acts of gun violence by persons with SMI (Severe mental illnesses) may exacerbate negative attitudes about an already stigmatized population. The phrase mental illness already holds a negative connotation and is a topic that is often submerged. Often, the media depicts those suffering from mental illnesses as corrupt citizens, resulting in the sway of public opinion to restrict firearms from patients instead of banning the weapons themselves. Large social media platforms do not specify each condition such a paranoia, schizophrenia, severe depression and anxiety. Instead, the media largely categorizes a vast, diverse population to depict a stereotypical hostile individua l. Additionally, civilians with the intent to harm others are difficult to detect as we lack tools capable of accurately identifying persons with SMI (severe mental illnesses) who are at heightened risk of committing future violence (McGinty). The media sheds an unflattering light on those with mental illnesses and presents them all as dangerous criminals; however, these mental illnesses are difficult to read and examine. Mental illness is a complex subject and has varying causes, the inaccuracy exhibited by social media to group them all in the same category displays ignorance. Although research has shown that those with mental illnesses have attributed to gun violence, detecting and predicting a pattern in patients is difficult. There is not a specific guideline or rubric to follow when one is attempting to predict a patients intent to proceed with a mass shooting. Therefore, mental illnesses do not contribute to gun violence and its attention should be refocused to banning guns a s a whole. Extensive background checks should be continued, eliminating the mentally ill from retrieving these firearms. Rigorous checks should be implemented instead of hasty glances at a candidates background. Research has shown a positive impact involving how background check rates are associated withsignificant decreases in the rate of gun accidents, and insignificant increases in firearm suicide (Friedman). The data shown enforces that background checks have decreased the rate of gun activity, concluding that the mentally ill should be restricted from retrieving weapons. Communities would transform into safer atmospheres, void of criminal activity and gruesome scenes of murders. The rate of activity would continue to drop if extensive checkups were placed along with routine monthly checks. If suspicious activity is found or reported, authoritative figures could delve into the situation and resolve the problem. As a result, the candidate would become cleared or have their gun privileges rev oked. Moreover, those with certain mental illnesses are reported to have erratic tendencies and are difficult to restrain. Lang emphasizes the importance of discussion involving mental illnesses as there was a link with aggressiveness and those possessing a mental illness, as those with schizophrenia, major depression, or bipolar disorder † were two to three times as likely as people without such an illness to be assaultive. The author does not generalize the entire population of those with mental illnesses, but specifies those that have the potential to be harmful. The rate of aggressiveness stemming from those with specific mental illnesses provides a statistical view as to how they could wreak havoc on communities. Disorders such as schizophrenia and depression retain sporadic impulses that can increase aggressiveness, leading to violence. The startling probability that those with mental illnesses are two to three times more likely to perform assaults should be alarming and cause a response for action. If in depth background checks were practiced, candidates that raised warning signals would promptly be denied. Extensive background checks would be a safety precaution to eliminate impulsive, unfit candidates. Countless lives could be saved if frequent background checks are installed. A bumper stock is an accessory that enables consumers to fire bullets faster, shortening the time it takes for a gun to recoil after a shot is fired. These attachments should be banned to decrease the number of potential bullets fired from those suffering from mental illnesses and those without. The accessory should not be permitted, as it transforms a regular firearm to a perilous automatic weapon used in war. Plath’s statement in lines 2-3 aids in discovering that Plath is trying to deliberate on a feminist issue of the female poet.   Plath is stating in these lines that the female poet is able to write about truth, without love or hate getting in the way, but that a truthful account of these emotions is the main objective of the poem, â€Å"I am not cruel, only truthful—† (Line 4).   In this statement it is revealed that Plath is stating that although female writers are often times considered to be too dynamic in their writing of emotions, that is, they may be considered cruel in their revelations, Plath is merely stating that these female writers are being honest, not interpretative. The image of the mirror in the poem is used as a catalyst for this idea of the woman writer, mainly, Plath.   Thus, although a mirror is typically used to reflect the outside world, Plath is using the device of the mirror to show the inner world; a type of self-reflection, as Freedman states, †¦the figure gazing at and reflected in the mirror is neither the child nor the man the woman-as-mirror habitually reflects, but a woman. In this poem, the mirror is in effect looking into itself, for the image in the mirror is woman, the object that is itself more mirror than person. A woman will see herself both in and as a mirror. To look into the glass is to look for oneself inside or as reflected on the surface of the mirror and to seek or discover oneself in the person (or non-person) of the mirror. The first stanza of the poem is used to support this statement by Freedman:   Plath using language to assert the dominance of the mirror as a pathway into which the inner workings of the female mind may be seen, â€Å"I have looked at it so long I think it is a part of my heart† (Lines 7-8). Although the poem is most clearly about identity, the poem is also about trying to find oneself.   Thus, although identity is the ultimate theme of the poem, it is a lack of identity that drives the narrative of the poem onwards past the motif of the mirror and into the more intricate design of the heart and soul through this device.   It seems that the narrator is conflicted about how to interpret what they see in the mirror, or at least how to define its edges, â€Å"But it flickers† (Line 8).   This could mean that the poet is trying to find her own identity in a literary world most usually dominated by men, â€Å"Faces and darkness separate us over and over† (Line 9). Many motifs may be considered when reading this poem, but the theme of identity and a dual or dichotomized identity may best be suited for a strong interpretation.   This dual nature of woman is seen firstly as a young girl who desires to be nothing but young.   This character makes sure that she appeases the male myth of docility and sexual appeasement, As such, she is the personificationor reflectionof the mirror as passive servant, the preconditionless object whose perception is a form of helpless swallowing or absorption. The image that finally appears in the mirror, the old woman as terrible fish, is the opposite or dark side of the mirror. She is the mirror who takes a kind of fierce pleasure in her uncompromising veracity and who, by rejecting the role of passive reflector for a more creative autonomy, becomes, in that same male-inscribed view, a devouring monster (Freedman 1993). This dualistic interpretation can be recognized in Plath’s word choices of, â€Å"I see her back, and reflect it faithfully†Ã‚   (Line 13).   Although the writer chooses to split her own self into these two factions she does not deny the other one’s existence. The source of the device of reflection, in not only the object of the mirror but through self and other devices in the poem are astounding.   In one line Plath writes, â€Å"Now I am a lake.   A woman bends over me† (Line 10).   In this line the reader may see that the use of a mirror was not large enough to encompass the personality (or personalities) of the female.   It seems that this dual side of the female is not in true contention with each other but instead these two split ‘people’ are trying to be united and stronger, as Plath writes, â€Å"I am important to her.   She comes and goes† (Line 15).   In this line the reader may interpret the meaning to be that Plath is writing of unification, of a source of twining of these two split, or mirrored women. In this idea of unity, Plath finishes the poem by alluding to unity only existing when the two female identities of the poem choose to recognize each other and become fully immersed with the other’s self, â€Å"Each morning it is her face that replaces the darkness.   In me she has drowned a young girl, and in me an old woman Rises toward her day after day, like a terrible fish† (Lines 15-17).   Thus, the concept of reflection seems to be a true question for the dominant female in the poem; will the reflection be that of a docile young girl, or an old woman? Thus, although the mirror is a reflection of a split personality it is also a political view of women as being split in society to differ to different roles:   mother, young girl, etc.   The mirror is used in the poem to reflect how society sees a woman and how much of what a person sees in a woman is merely a reflection of what they imagine a woman to be, as Freedman states, †¦the mirrors principal and imposed obligation is to reflect infant and otherthat is, she must present herself as the image mirrored in mans eyes. But as speaking mirror, the woman becomes a narrating reflector of herself as mirror and of whatever passes before it. She becomes the writer who writes of the mirror in which she perceives herself and of the mirror she is. She becomes the text in which that recording occurs. Thus Plath redefines the role of woman, or at least points out the ways in which a woman is too dependent upon the mirror or society, or more specifically man. In this way the reader may read the poem to be self-suppressing in that the narrator is being tortured in the mirror because it is more of a cage than a reflection, since it’s reflection is false and only reflects what people want to see, not what is truly there.   Thus, when Plath says, â€Å"terrible fish† she is asserting the breaking of the mirror since the reflection for man or society would have been a beautiful girl which would have been the lie.   Therefore, the end of the poem relates back to the first stanza in which the narrator assures the audience that what she is saying is not cruel but only veracious, not a young girl but a fish. Thus, the self in Plath’s poem is a vanishing truth according to the mirror’s reflection, â€Å"Plaths Mirror narrates a lifetime of interactions with a nameless, faceless woman and imagines aging as disfigurement† (Hunter).   Thus, the theme of truth is once again supported from a critic’s viewpoint.   In conclusion, Plath’s poem delves into the feminine psyche using elements of the dual nature of the mirror in relation to the many sided roles of a woman in society.   This idea of female as being representational of society instead of being truthful is what allows the poem to cross the lines of predetermined gender manipulation and with the inclusion of the word ‘I’ throughout the poem, the reader is permitted to think that the speaker is Sylvia Plath and that the poem is therefore an autobiographical message about the social implications of being a female and a poet in a profession typically dominated by men. Mystifying the Senses: Bimodal Speech Perception My grandmother, like many elderly people, suffers from hearing loss. Recently however, she has begun to lose her sight as well. Curiously enough, though her level of auditory impairment remains the same since macular degeneration has claimed her ability to see, her hearing seems to have deteriorated further. Could this be simply the result of alienation because of the loss of a further sense? This situation led me to wonder about my own hearing ability. I have often experienced hearing difficulty in settings where I cannot see the person who is talking to me-in a movie theater, or over the telephone. The questions raised here call into question the conventional notion of sensory processing. Distinctive inputs are received by their respective processing organ and the end result is relayed to the brain. How then can we explain a seeming reliance of two different sensory percepts on each other? Is there more to hearing than our ears? Historically, scientific evidence for the existence of sensory integration has long existed, but the first formal theory developed to this effect was stumbled upon by Harry McGurk and John MacDonald of the University of Surrey (1). The scientists were involved in a study of how infants perceive speech by playing a video of a mother talking in one place and playing the sound of her voice in another place. They randomly began to play with the consequences of dubbing an particular audio sound onto the video of the mother saying a different sound (2). They found that when the auditory syllable, "ba-ba" was imposed on the visual syllable "ga-ga", "da-da" was heard. The same occurred when the audio and visual syllables were reversed. Also, "pa-pa" dubbed on "ka-ka" was heard as "ta-ta". When one of the sensory inputs was eliminated by closing the eyes, or plugging the ears, the correct syllable was identified (2). McGurk and McDonald found "Contemporary, auditory-based theories of speech p erception...inadequate to accommodate these new observations" and concluded that there must be some allowance made for the influence of the visual on hearing (2). The conventional theory of the senses is challenged. So, speech perception is bimodal. Of course, as science repeatedly shows, nothing is simple as that. The question remains, how does this integration occur? When does it occur? What neurological systems are involved? It has become generally accepted that audio and visual inputs are received by independent organs (the ears and eyes) and that integration occurs sometime after these two systems have "processed" the input.

The Women’s Rights Movement Women’s Suffrage is a subject that could easily be considered a black mark on the history of the United States. The entire history of the right for women to vote takes many twists and turns but eventually turned out alright. This paper will take a look at some of these twists and turns along with some of the major figures involved in the  suffrage  movement. The first recorded instance in American history where a woman demanded the right to vote was in 1647.Margaret Brent, a property owner in Maryland wanted two votes in the newly formed colonial assembly to represent her vote and the vote of Lord Baltimore whom she held power-of-attorney. (Pleck, 2007) The governor eventually turned down her demands. The 1790 constitution of New Jersey allowed women property owners the right to vote through a loophole that stated that â€Å"all inhabitants† that met property and residence requirements could vote.This loophole was closed in 1807 by a state legislator that had almost lost an election due to a women’s voting bloc. Other than these isolated incidents the first organized women’s  suffrage movement  can be traced back to the mid 1800’s with the  Seneca Falls  Convention. The organized movement started at Seneca Falls, NY with a meeting called by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott. (National Women's History Museum, 2007) Both women received their start in the women’s suffrage movement by being active in the abolitionist movement.Elizabeth Cady Stanton was an important element of the Women’s Rights Movement, but not many people know of her significance or contributions because she has been overshadowed by her longtime associate and friend, Susan B. Anthony. However, I feel that she was a woman of great importance who was the driving force behind the 1848 Convention, played a leadership role in the women’s rights movement for the next fifty years, and in the wor ds of Henry Thomas, â€Å"She was the architect and author of the movement’s most important strategies ad documents. † Elizabeth Cady Stanton was born in 1815 into an affluent family in Johnstown, New York.Now, while Stanton was growing up, she tried to imitate her brother’s academic achievements due to the fact that her parents, Daniel and Mary Livingston Cady, preferred their sons to their daughters. In trying to copy her male siblings, she got an extraordinary education: she went to Johnstown Academy and studied Greek and mathematics; she learned how to ride and manage a horse; she became a skilled debater; and she attended the Troy Female Seminary in New York (one of the first women ‘s academies to offer an advanced education equal to that of male academies) where she studies logic, physiology, and natural rights philosophy.However, it wasn’t her education, but watching her father, who was a judge and lawyer, handle his cases, that cause her to become involved in various women rights movements. Stanton and Mott attended the World’s Anti-Slavery Convention in London in 1840 and were refused seating for being women. After this incident the two women started seeing a connection between the plight of slaves and the treatment of women in the United States. The women’s movement took a back seat to the slavery movement during the American Civil War as the women turned their attention to working through the war.However, after the war was over the women’s movement thought they were in a good position to win some key battles due to their war work and the attention being paid to equal rights at the time. This was not to be so as the Republicans in power believed that women’s suffrage would hurt their chances to push forth rights for freed slaves because of the widespread unpopularity of women’s rights. (National Women's History Museum, 2007)   After the war the women’s movement split into r ival factions with Stanton and Susan B.Anthony forming the National Woman’s Suffrage Association and Lucy Stone and Julia Ward Howe forming the American Woman’s Suffrage Association. The NWSA did not support the passing of the 15th amendment because the amendment did not address the giving of equal rights to women as well as blacks and fought against the passing of the amendment as a result. The AWSA supported the 15th amendment and wanted to fight for women’s rights in the states separately. Pleck, 2007) The two movements eventually reunited in 1890 to become the National American Woman Suffrage Association led by Susan B. Anthony until 1900 when Carrie Chapman Catt took over. Catt was integral in the strategy to work for women’s suffrage on both the federal and state level upon her re-election to president of the NAWSA in 1915 which led to another faction split between the NAWSA and a group led by Alice Paul who believed that the major push of the fight needed to be focused at the federal level. About. com, 2007)   Finally all the hard work of the women’s movement paid off in the summer of 1920 with the ratification of the 19th amendment. This was not an easily won victory however. Congress first took up the issue in 1915 but the bill lost in the voting and was shelved for almost three years. (â€Å"Women's Suffrage,† 2007) On the eve of the vote President Wilson made a widely publicized appeal for the passage of the bill and this time the bill barely passed with the need two-thirds majority.However, the bill failed to gain the necessary votes to pass the Senate even with another of President Wilson’s appeals for the passage of the bill. The bill would be voted down twice over the following year before finally gaining enough votes to pass due to Congress’ interest in having the issue solved prior to the presidential elections slated for 1920 and on June 4, 1919 the Senate voted to pass the bill to add the amendment to the constitution securing women’s rights. The effects of the 19th amendment on the United States can be seen everywhere.More women now hold public office and the United States even has a woman running for the Democratic nomination for president. The women’s voting block is one politicians cannot forget about and still have hopes of being successful. The ability of women to vote, even though sparsely used until the 1980s, changed how companies did business and what legislation was passed for respect of the potential voting power of women. More women friendly policies exist, both in the workplace and in general life, which can be attributed to the hard work of the pioneers in the women’s movement.Knowing that men controlled the ability of women to vote and that a way of life would be drastically changed makes the gains of women to vote even more amazing.
